and training of both horse and rider, and the regulation of equestrian facilities in the UK (and most recently in the USA).Many people do not realise that the BHS is a Charity and carries out a lot of good work to promote many varied equestrian sports and activities - from Novice to full International Competition level. In addition the BHS works from grass roots level upwards to improve the lot of the horse, offering better education and training of both horse and rider, and the regulation of equestrian facilities in the UK (and most recently in the USA).

As the name suggest the ILPH are truly international, but surprisingly they still have to do a lot of rescue work for starved, ill-treated and abandoned horses in the Developed Nations such as the UK and the USA.They also run campaigns against the transportation of live animals for slaughter, and operate a re-homing scheme for rescued horses.

INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR THE PROTECTION OF HORSES (ILPH)

The Brooke helps thousands of working horses, donkeys and mules, and those who depend upon them in some of the poorest areas of the world. Emphasis is placed upon educating and training the people who rely on the animals, to improve both health and welfare over the short and the long-term. One of their latest projects is to provide mobile veterinary services in some of the poorest parts of Ethiopia.

THE BROOKE

The newest branch of the ILPH, based in Lansing, Michigan, USA.  Larry and Marika Heuer have given up their lives (almost!) to try and establish a presence for the ILPH in America.  They are operating on a very tight budget, with great plans to build and extend a rescue centre for neglected horses, not just in Michigan, but throughout the USA (they helped with the disaster caused by Hurricane Katrina a few years back).

We really applaud their efforts and certainly appreciated the hospitality and friendliness they afforded us during our visit, and we would like to do all we can to help them in return.  Please donate what you can to these guys, and if you can leave them a note to say you read about them from your friends at HorseQuest USA, they'd like to know about it!
